On August 25th, 2001, R&B superstar Aaliyah, boarded a Cessna 402 plane at a Bahamian airport. The singer had just wrapped production on her latest video, “Rock The Boat”, off of her newly released and self-titled album. In what would be her final tragic moment, the plane unexpectedly plummeted from the air, crashing and killing its occupants. The intoxicated pilot lost control of his vehicle, and subsequently, became responsible for the death of Aaliyah and seven others. The event sent shockwaves throughout the music community. At only 22 years of age, Aaliyah had cemented herself as one of the industry’s brightest young acts. Her voice defined the R&B genre during the 1990s, and would prove to be an incredible influence for years to come.

In honour of the the late singer, and on the anniversary of her passing, we reminisce on the legacy and talent of Aaliyah Haughton. Here are the five best Aaliyah songs.

4. We Need A Resolution

The sonic bounce we associate with Aaliyah, can be entirely attributed to hip-hop maestro, Timbaland.  “We Need A Resolution” is pretty much the perfect example of early 2000s R&B. The musical architecture of “Resolution” later translated into the genre’s future successes. This is heard most notably, in Justin Timberlake’s solo debut, Justified. The glitzy drum patterns which Aaliyah had mastered, helped break the sound to the mainstream, and allowed JT to dominate the charts the following year. The song was released as the lead single to Aaliyah’s third and final studio album, and it also produced this classic music video.
