Ceramides: Everything You Didn’t Know You Need to Know, About This Hero Skincare Ingredient

They’re the lipids that help hold your skin together, yet most of us rarely think about them. Here’s why dermatologists consider ceramides one of the most important ingredients for a healthy, resilient complexion.

Did you know that ceramides are the glue that hold your skin together? Literally. They’re the waxy lipids (a.k.a: fats) that make up about 50 per cent of your skin’s outer layer and help play defense against stuff like pollution, harsh weather and dirt and grime.

As you age though, your natural ceramide levels can decline, which can leave your skin feeling dry, irritated or less resilient. Which makes fortifying them with skincare products infused with ceramides a smart step in your grooming routine. So much so that when skin healthcare brand Skinara sent a 2026 survey to a panel of board-certified dermatologists asking for their insight on choosing the most commonly recommended ingredient for anti-aging, pigmentation, acne and sensitive skin, the majority chose ceramides. Here’s what Skinara experts had to say and what you need to know about this hero ingredient:

Nothing in your skincare routine works without them

Ceramides keep skin hydrated, calm and prepared for your other skincare products. That’s because they are lipids, which make up about 50 per cent of the skin barrier. But seasonal changes, pollution, over-cleansing, UV exposure and aging can reduce the amount of ceramides your skin can make on its own. And by age 40, your natural ceramide production decreases by up to 60 per cent. David Chyou, Principal Scientist in computational biology at Skinara, says skin health is influenced by oxidation, inflammation, barrier damage and how the skin responds to stress. We never stop there; we always ask this question: “Is this ingredient clinically effective on the skin? Healthy skin isn’t just about the skin cells you can see—it also depends on a living ecosystem of microorganisms that help maintain balance, resilience and barrier function,” says Chyou.

It makes or breaks your retinol results

Ceramides are a must-have in any retinol routine. They help retinol penetrate the skin without drying, flaking or turning it red. When you apply retinol, the skin speeds up cell turnover, which can damage the skin barrier if ceramide levels are not enough. “The standard in the industry is prescribing ceramides with retinol,” adds a Skinara expert. “When you take care of your barrier, the skin can tolerate higher and more frequent doses of retinol, helping you achieve better results.” Creating a ceramide-rich routine before adding retinol can help. Choose brands that include probiotics and prebiotics, as they help balance the skin’s natural bacteria, creating a strong foundation for retinol.

It has no common restrictions, unlike other ingredients

Ceramides are one of the few active ingredients safe for every age and skin type. Unlike retinol, vitamin C and acids, ceramides have no pregnancy restrictions, low stability concerns and a longer shelf-life. They help lock in moisture without penetrating deep into the skin, which is why dermatologists consider them safe even for babies. “Ceramides are already part of the skin’s natural structure,” continues Chyou. “So, when you apply ceramides, you are not forcing the skin to change or increase cell turnover; you’re restoring skin balance.” Maintain ceramide levels proactively also helps to prevent sensitivity, dryness and long-term barrier damage.
