Fragrance Of The Month: Lacoste Match Point

This month? We try out Lacoste Match Point EDT

For almost nine decades, the Lacoste brand has been a part of our culture. First, in 1933 as a clean, white, tennis polo shirt emblazoned with a green crocodile. Later, and in part courtesy of the label-obsessed ’80s, as a fulsome French fashion house complete with watches, footwear, men’s and women’s clothing and our favourite of all, fragrance.

After more than sixty years of scent with an equal and growing number of bottles to it’s sporty name, it’s safe to say that Match Point, brand founder René Lacoste’s latest eau de toilette for men, will be just as much of an on-and-off-the-courts success as it’s predecessors.

On first spritz Match Point is zesty and aromatic thanks to notes of tart grapefruit, zingy pink pepper and herbal basil. Bitter smelling gentiana flower mixed with dry clary safe and fresh geranium notes soon float forward adding a sense of energy and optimism to the elixir before easing into a clear and warm base comprised of sharp vetiver and intimate cashmeran. The overall effect is elegant and lush, woody and spicy, velvety and smooth—the perfect player for the ultimate gentleman’s game.

Further highlighting the sport that drives the brand are the courtside roots featured visibly, yet subtly across the bottle. It’s refined lines and edges are the embodiment of tennis and it’s players. The internal curve at the base represents the indent a match point leaves in the clay. The green cap mimics the grip on the racquet’s shaft and the name, well, the name is unequivocal proof that the Lacoste scent is and will always be a true winner.

Lacoste Match Point EDT, $95 for 100 ml, available at the Hudson’s Baystores across Canada and online at www.thebay.com.
