Woman Crush Wednesday: Zoe Kravitz

Above: Zoe Kravitz

Name: Zoe Kravitz

Birthdate: December 1, 1988

Birthplace: Venice Beach, California

Claim to fame: Well, to begin with, she has famous parents. Her dad is legendary musician Lenny Kravitz and her mom is actress Lisa Bonet (famously known for playing Denis Huxtable on The Cosby Show back in the day). But she’s also made a name for herself as a singer and an actress — she fronts the rising band Lolawolf and has starred in major movies X:Men: First Class, The Divergent Series, and recently, in Mad Max: Fury Road.

What we can see her in next: Her latest movie is an offbeat comedy called Dope, which she stars as Nakia and hits theatres everywhere on June 19.

Interesting fact: She’s best friends with Jennifer Lawrence and says they share a very “Beavis and Butthead” type friendship.

Best quote: “I’m only at the beginning of my career, but I feel successful in that I haven’t sold out in any way, shape or form. I feel good about the choices I’ve made, and I don’t feel like I’ve let go of any of my values.” — On the importance of succeeding in Hollywood on her own terms.

Why we love her: Today our WCW is Zoe Kravitz, offspring of famous musician Lenny Kravitz and Cosby Show actress Lisa Bonet. Like her father, Zoe beats to her own drum. Which is exactly the appeal — she’s bohemian, free-spirted, and just seems to do whatever she wants. She credits her dad with instilling that value in her at a young age, to make sure that if you succeed in Hollywood and show business, that it’s on your own terms and not something else they try to make of you. That value and persona definitely comes across — Zoe seems pretty badass, not to mention beautiful and obviously talented. But lets be real, it would be a genetic disaster to come from parents like that and not possess either great singing or acting ability.

Lucky for Zoe, she seems to have gotten both. She fronts the rising band Lolawolf (which she claims is just a hobby and something she doesn’t care about making money off of), who released their debut album in October 2014, as well as joined Lily Allen on tour in 2014. She’s also one of the hottest rising stars in the acting community as well, appearing in some major franchise movies of late — X:Men: Last Stand (2011), playing the role of Christina in the sci-fi dystopian franchise The Divergent Series, and most recently, playing Toast the Knowing in George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road.

Obviously coming from the parents she does, opportunities were going to be there for a young artist on the rise. She’ll be the first to say there were famous people coming in and out of her household growing up, like the time she came home in the morning and Ashton Kutcher was just in her kitchen cooking an omelet. But all fame and fortune aside, you can’t deny she has serious talent and original charm and style that make it clear she’s going to carve out her own space in the industry.

Also did I mention she’s best friends with Jennifer Lawrence? Now there’s no way you can attract the friendship of the most likeable and sought after girl in Hollywood without having your own cool vibe going on. That alone is probably all the justification you need as to why Zoe Kravitz is awesome and will probably continue to become a bigger and bigger star — even with the large shadow her famous father left for her.

You can catch Zoe Kravitz in her latest film, Dope, which hits theatres everywhere on June 19. OR, you can just look up her band on YouTube, Lolawolf. They’re pretty awesome as well.
