If you’re a Marvel fan, you know the ever-expanding cinematic universe has a long way to go before it runs out of material. That’s because there are thousands of comic book issues featuring every superhero from Iron Man to Captain America to the X-Men. DC is starting to build their own universe as well with the recent release of Batman V. Superman and the upcoming Suicide Squad. But the thought of reading all the comic books that continue to inspire the movies is more than a little daunting.

Luckily, there are plenty of non-super hero graphic novel series to read instead. So why not take a break from all the caped crusaders and give something different a chance? Here are a few graphic novel series to remind you that the medium is about a lot more than just super heroes.

From the Eisner-award winning team of Greg Rucka and Michael Lark comes Lazarus, a series that follows main character Forever Carlyle as she does whatever it takes to protect her family in a dystopian future where government is a defunct concept. The series is published by Image Comics and is currently in development to be adapted for TV.
